Why is my cat so scared and jumpy after an attack? How can I help?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 17 lbs

My cat was ambushed by another cat on our upstairs patio, twice. No serious injuries, he had a cut ear. Since then, he has seemed...traumatized. He is the definition of a scaredy-cat now. He jumps at the slightest noise, sometimes if I happen to walk behind him he reacts with fear and will just take off. Hes a very sweet, large lap cat otherwise, he just seems very paranoid now, doors closing scare him, sometimes he seems scared for no reason. Is this normal? Is there anything I can do to help?

I'm not surprised Chippy is jumpy, he was ambushed and he likely doesn't feel safe at the moment. I would get Feliway diffuser, it releases calming pheromones. Pair it with a Sentry calming collar, this may help him.
