Pet staples: How long is too long if my pet's incision won't heal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My vet took the top staple out yesterday as it moved. Would you of put another staple in? Also is it normal to have a to keep staples in for 2-3-4 weeks? Vets said we could have another few weeks with them in as she struggling to heal. Picture doesn't show how open it is. It's quite deep still.

You can keep staples in for as long as needed, as long as they are not causing any irritation / other problems. I would agree with the vet and keep those in a little while longer. I would not place another staple in that area though. The incision appears to be intact still based on the picture. However, if the picture does not show how open it is, then I would have the vet take a look at this and make that decision on whether or not another staple should be placed.

Thank you very much for your inquiry. Given that the dog will have his cone on and that the wound seems to be healing nicely, most veterinary staples can stay in for two weeks and not have any problems when they are removed. I encourage you, however, to contact the veterinarian who placed the staples and make sure that this is the case. I hope this helps. Have a nice day.
