Pet's info: Fish | Gold Fish | Male | unneutered
I have a common goldfish, and recently he has been getting stuck in the filter and shredding his fins. I blocked it and cleaned his whole tank, but he has been floating on his side, but moving much. When he does move, he spins. I believe this is due to swim bladder disease but am unsure of the cause. I don’t not believe this is due to constipation. I am seeing about getting him melafix, but would like to know if I should do anything else for him?

Thanks for reaching out about Bacon. If a swim bladder infection and over-distention (causing the floating), systemic antibiotics are needed. Melafix will do little to solve this problem as the medication is not absorbed into the body. Systemic antibiotics are recommended, as in injections. A veterinary visit would be necessary for the prescribing. Check and correct water quality, as this is required for health. Good luck.
