My dog's hip pops after FHO surgery. Is he lazy or is it serious?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | English Cocker Spaniel | Male | 2 years old

English Cocker spaniel named NIkko who is two as of Nov 19,2019.On December 16th,2018 he had an FHO done to his right hip b/c he was born w/ Hip Dysplasia. After, we noticed he walks weird & twists his legs out when he walks. The Vet said hes just being lazy & isnt in any pain.As of 2 weeks ago his leg makes a loud pop as he walks. He doesnt seem to be in pain but this makes me worry about his hip conditions w/ the FHO and his other still arthritic hip. Why is his hip popping? Is he being lazy?

Poor guy. Popping can indicate that the bones are not aligned well and essentially hitting one another. A dog being lazy would not have anything to do with an abnormal gait or a popping noise. The best piece of advice here would be to do post-op x-rays to check out the hips again and make sure things are aligning well. If things are looking ok on x-ray, then it really is a mystery as to why there is a popping sound. A referral to an orthopedic specialist would be recommended if you want to look further into this. IT is good that Nikko doesn't seem painful however, so benign neglect is also an option here. I hope that you get to the bottom of this strange post-surgery issue that Nikko is having. Best of luck and take care.
