What's wrong with my cat's ear? What could be causing the issue?

Hi and thanks for posting on Boop by Petco! Thank you for sending along pictures but they are a little hard to make out clearly. This could be an infection-bacterial or perhaps fungal. It could also be due to a flea allergy. I would recommend keeping Jorfy on a flea preventative monthly to rule out a flea allergy but also have him see his veterinarian. Your veterinarian may do a skin scraping and/or fungal culture to rule out bacterial infection or a fungal infection. He may need antibiotics, antifungal medications, or other medications as needed. If he is itchy in other spots of his body then this is probably due to an allergy, although it could also be infection or mites. First of all, in order to rule out skin parasites, you will need to treat with a high quality flea treatment, then ask the vet to perform a skin scrape - this might reveal an infection or a mite infestation. If all of those came back negative, the next step is to treat the allergy symptomatically and try to discover the cause of the allergy. Although a picture of it would help to give you a more specific answer, this lump/bump/growth should be ideally examined by your local vet to have a diagnosis established. Your vet may want to perform an FNA (fine needle aspiration) or a biopsy to sample the bump and determine its underlying nature. Differentials would include skin cysts, infections, benign or more malignant type of tumors. Judging from the picture you provided, I see black waxy material and also a tattoo that has been done on the inside of the pinna. The tattoo is likely to indicate that she has been spayed and it is in the pattern of a circle with a linear line through it. That is not a concern at all and will be permanent. The black wax may be due to ear mites or an ear infection though. As there is not species noted or age, this is quite difficult for me to assess with your description and photos. I will try to help as much as I can though. This looks like the inside of the ear under the ear flap. I cannot see the entrance to the ear canal and it looks quite swollen. I would strongly urge you to see your veterinarian to have this diagnosed and treated appropriately. When ear infections get this bad they can be quite difficult to treat. It may be a long road to treat this and get 100% resolution. Most likely this will require oral medications and topical ear medications. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. Without seeing at least a photo it is very difficult to say what is going on here. It sounds likely that he has an ear hematoma (swelling of the ear flap) possibly due to an underlying ear infection. If he is scratching at it then that is probably why his whole ear seems affected. The other options would be a skin parasite, an allergic reaction or even a skin cancer. It is best to get him to your vet for an exam so he can get a proper diagnosis and treatment.

Three main type of allergies are usually affecting pets: food allergies, flea and parasite related ones and environmental type (allergens coming from trees, pollens, dust etc etc).
