My dog has hives and seems fine. Does he need urgent vet care?

Pet's info: Dog | Boxer | Male | neutered | 1 year old | 50 lbs

Our 1 year old boxer has hives. Not sure from what. He ate and is drinking water, does not appear to be in pain. What could it be and how can we treat? Should we take to an urgent after hours clinic?

It does look like a bad case of hives. The problem with allergic reactions is that they often get worse, and can lead to breathing difficulties. Due to this, I would take Bruno into an urgent after hours clinic now.

This is likely an allergic reaction. As long as she isn't having trouble breathing then this can wait until your vet opens, but I would definitely get her seen today. in the meantime you can give her 50mg (2 adult tablets) Benadryl by mouth. I hope this helps.

Your poor pup! Typically hives like that are due to an allergic reaction, which could be due to something environmental, a bite from an insect, or even food. Given that you have administered Benadry with no effect, I would take him into the vet immediately. The problem with allergic reactions is that they can progress to swelling of the face and muzzle, and this could block his breathing leading to respiratory distress. He likely needs stronger drugs like steroids to control the reaction. Please take him into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. This is probably an allergic reaction due to an insect bite or a plant outside. those reactions tend to resolve within 48 hours without treatment. if the swelling becomes too large or if your dog becomes lethargic, take him to the vet in order to get an antihistamine/steroid injection. from your description at this moment i think he is probably fine, but this can change so monitor him closely.

My dog is breaking out in hives. He hasn't been outside much today except potty breaks and a short run. No human food either. He's very whiney, he also has thrown up a few times.
That's not good. I wonder if Spot is suffering from a contact allergy causing his hives. Vomiting can also be a sign of an allergic reaction. My dog got stung by ground bees he has hives on him. I gave him a cold bath and a benadryl what should I do?
If the symptoms don't seem to bad and if he isn't lethargic or having problems breathing just wait 2-3 hours, it should start getting better by then. in any case of respiratory problems or lethargy you must take him to the vet urgently.

Poor girl. As long as her airway is clear and she doesn't seem to be in distress. It is likely ok to wait until morning ot get Rosie seen. She is having an acute allergic reaction, but the hives seem to be the extent of it, which means she is stable enough for now. I hope that Rosie's hives resolve soon and best of luck finding out what triggered this reaction so that it can be best avoided in the future. Take care and thanks for visting Boop by Petco! : )

He had hives as of last night and now they are gone. But he's acting a bit off. No signs of sickness just clingy and seeming to be nit himself. Should I call the vet or wait to see if he gets better on his own? I'm one worried momma.
If he is eating and drinking and resting well then you can watch him for another 24 hours. He may be scared or feeling bad due to try allergic reaction he experienced. If he is not back to normal then I would take him to the vet

Poor Bruno! I'd be concerned he could be suffering from an allergic reaction. It could also possibly be from the injury he suffered two days before. I would take him into a vet now to get this checked out. Best of luck.

My dog has a lot of bumps on her head. They almost look like mosquito bites and they're getting bigger and she's getting more. It started about 10 minutes ago. I don't know what it is or what to do.
If these just arose out of nowhere I would be concerned they are hives and she is having an allergic reaction. Since they are on her face, I would consider this an emergency, so it would be recommended to take her in to the emergency clinic right away, where they can give her a shot of benadryl and a steroid shot to stop the reaction. In severe cases of allergic reactions the face can continue to swell and the swelling can extend to the airway, becoming life threatening, and we don't want that to happen!

My dog just got up with hives on her paws and legs which is going to her lower back but I have given her 15 mg of be Benadryl and she weighs roughly 17 lbs should I take her to urgent care?
I would recommend taking Oreo to urgent care if the hives have not resolved 30 minutes after giving Benadryl. Oreo may need an injection of a corticosteroid to resolve the allergic reaction, and an allergic reaction can get worse quickly if not treated appropriately.
