My dog's umbilical hernia wasn't removed after neuter. Is it normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Hi, I have a 6 month old mini goldendoodle with a small umbilical hernia. When we initially took him to the vet she said she would remove the hernia when he was neutered. He was neutered 3 days ago and the vet didn't remove the hernia because she said it had closed up and didn't want to put him through more unnecessary surgery when it didn't pose a risk. We could still feel the hernia, and I was just wondering if this seemed normal? Or if I should consult with another vet to have it removed?

If the hernia is not reducible, meaning when you push it it does NOT go back into the body, then it does not need to be fixed. It is only a cosmetic blemish. If the hernia IS reducible, where you can push it back into the body, then it should be repaired.
