My cat's jaw trembles when she bites gently. Is it bite inhibition?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | 6 years and 2 months old

You know when we try biting someone as a joke and our jaws lose strength and slightly “shake” because we don’t really want to hurt them? My cat is able to bite normally, with strength. But at some points when we’re playing she gets close to bite me and her jaw trembles a bit and she doesn’t bite or bites gently like she “doesn’t want to hurt me”. What could this be? Is it the same thing that happens with humans or is it definitely something else?

That is hard to say. Cats do have bite inhibition meaning she is only playing and doesn't want to hurt you so it's possible this is what she is doing. Monitor her closely during other times when her jaw is in use. Watch for any problems chewing food, grooming or any trouble holding onto toys when she is playing. If you see anything abnormal, have her examined by the veterinarian to be safe. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.
