Dog vomiting & accidents after eating poop? What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Spitz | Male | neutered | 10 months and 27 days old | 11 lbs

Hello, My dog, Oliver, is 11 months now. He puked this morning and had a little #2 accident, even though he’s potty trained. I’m concerned about his health. I think maybe he ate something? He always tires to eat things off the floor when I take him on walks. Also, he has a habit of wanting to eat feces. Is that normal? He had that habit as a puppy, by trying to eat his own feces, but now it’s other animals’. Please help!

Many dogs eat feces, it's a common behavior. It could be eating feces has made Oliver sick. Since he vomited, I'm going to give you a home remedy to see if that helps him. Withhold food for 12 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, he vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away.
