My dog swallowed a scrunchie. Is it an emergency? What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My dog 12yrs. Old 58 pounds swallowed a scrunchie. She broke it half and swallowed the elastic part I got the fabric part from her. She got to it because my Grandmother unknowingly put the laundry basket on the floor in her reach. My stepmom has had dogs all her life and said she would be fine but I'm worried.

She will likely pass it within the next 24 hours. Monitor for lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite or abdominal pain. These are symptoms that may indicate an obstruction. If you want to be 100% safe, have her seen at the nearest veterinary ER. Vomiting can be induced via injection which should bring the scrunchie back up. This is most successful when done within 2 hours of ingestion.
