My cat won't eat after a death. How long can he survive without food?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 15 lbs

My 3 year old cat is no longer eating and acting very off (biting more and depressed). His brother died a couple weeks ago of possible cancer but I didnt get a diagnosis. I have tried multiple types of food, all I can get him to do is lick the wet food. I have a vet apt. On Monday but I'm scared he wont last that long. How long can he survive without eating a full meal? Is this possible grief?

It’s a medical emergency when a cat won’t eat, and if they go longer than 72 hours without eating, they will develop a fatty liver. A fatty liver is fatal without treatment. Koko cannot wait until Monday to be seen, i strongly urge you to take him into an ER vet now.
