My cat has a small bladder. Is this normal? Will it affect his life?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Applehead Siamese | Male | neutered | 5 years and 3 months old | 13 lbs

My cat Binx just saw vet today due to some issues passing urine. The vet told me he had an unusually small bladder and it occasionally gets inflamed. My question is, is it normal for a cat to have a small bladder? Does that hinder his quality of life?

Hello. I am not sure what your vet means by an unusually small bladder. The urinary bladder has a great ability to expand, so if Binx's bladder is not doing so, I would be concerned about the possibility of the presence of some scar tissue or adhesions on the bladder that may be limiting its ability to expand. This MIGHT make him a little more prone to developing infections, but it is best to ask your veterinarian specifically why he thinks Binx has a small bladder & if any additional testing is warranted. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
