Thinking of vet school? Do you need to love science and memorizing?

As a student and currently as a vet, how fascinated and interested are you in biology and science as a whole? I enjoy math, history and many aspects of both chemistry and biology. I'm extremely worried that my interests don't align with those needed to be a vet. In university and vet school, did you find the workload as enjoyable or just something that had to be done to work as your desired career? Do you really enjoy memorizing different medicines, body parts..etc?

So I actually have a major in psychology with a minor in veterinary medicine. I really liked science and biochemistry, hated math and physics with a passion. They were my nemesis. Your interests do not have to align 100% to be a vet, just have the drive and concentration to learn and study. I did not enjoy pathology in vet school. It was my least favorite. Oh that and cattle!

Hello, you'll need to complete all of your basic sciences and math (biology, general chemistry, organic chemistry and biochemistry, genetics, physiology, zoology, physics, algebra, integrative math analysis, and calculus). Some vet schools do require calculus as a pre-requisite to apply, but not all vet school. So it really depends on where you will end up applying to. That being said, you still have your undergraduate career ahead of you to get a calculus course if needed and who knows, you may find something else that is more interesting to you than veterinary medicine!

I am sure it helps to have a ll A's, however every vet school has their own admission criteria, so it is best you write to the vet schools you are interested in attending to find out what their admission criteria are. Some require extensive volunteering with a vet, certain science courses, etc. Good Luck!

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! What I like the most about my career is being able to help pets in need and support owners through that process. Veterinary medicine is very interesting because of how broad the field is and how much you learn on a daily basis. Anyone interested in becoming a veterinarian should start by getting more experience in the profession by shadowing a veterinarian and also studying very hard and making an effort to learn and get good grades. The most difficult aspect of becoming a veterinarian is continuing to do well in schools which can be quite hard and also being able to balance life outside of school with school work. Also, it is also very costly which puts some pressure on you as a veterinary student as well. Personal characteristics required for this profession include being compassionate, intelligent, curious, motivated and above all caring. Good luck with your project! I hope you get an A!

Hello, I'd recommend an undergraduate degree in biology, chemistry, or animal science. However, you can complete any degree as long as you have the core pre-requisites for the schools you want to apply to. It takes 3 years to complete enough courses to apply to veterinary school. Vet school takes 4 years. I'd recommend reading more about the profession and scheduling some volunteer time with your local animal shelters and veterinarians. It can be a harsh career field. When did you start studying for veterinary medicine and what can I do in high school besides animal experience and good grades
I started in high school. I needed good grades to get into a good university. I did not get into vet school my first try. I went and got a master's degree and worked for a few years before trying again. I did get into vet school on my second try. If it's a dream of yours to be a vet, go for it and keep trying! There are tons of vet who didn't get into school the first time around. Having extracurricular activities is good as well. Well rounded people at looked highly upon for vet school. Someone who studies all the time may not have the social skills needed to be a vet, and you do see in school that the ones with the best grades in vet school tend to have the most trouble relating to clients. Sports are a good idea. I was a swimmer; in fact, it paid for my university education with a scholarship. I hope this helps!

Hi and thanks for your request. The salary and the promotion steps would vary a lot depending on the type of work you are doing (clinical versus public health vs research). The passion for biology and animals and medicine gave me inspiration for choosing this profession. Personal hardest animals are horses. It is quite easy to get a job but that would depend were you work and what type of job you want to do. Passion for animals and learning and perseverance are important in this profession and they are what you have to keep in mind (unwritten rules). I have learned that failure is an important part of this profession and has to be taken with a positive attitude.

The skills required for being a vet are numerous, as you not only have to have the skills to complete 2 difficult university degrees, but also have the people skills to talk to owners. You also have to have skills to think on your feet, be resourceful, be good at both working alone and as a team, be good with handling animals and also be good with understanding money and be good at running a business. Along with this you also have to be kind, compassionate, patient and caring. It is a very difficult career, but a very rewarding one. I am a veterinarian and I would be glad to answer your questions! 1. Yes, the job is worth it to me. I love what I do, and in veterinary medicine, there are many different career paths. I was a small animal vet, but I've since moved into an industry job focusing on food safety and animal welfare. It's not where I thought I would end up working, but I absolutely love it. 2. Ha ha yes, you will always run into pets that will bite in this job! 3. I recommend picking a college that has a pre-veterinary program. That way, it ensures you take the courses you need in order to be eligible for vet school. I went to Purdue University, so I highly recommend that :-) 4. Yes, I do love my job. I have a great work/life balance, my particular sector of the industry is very low stress, and and I find the work interesting. What an interesting project! Very worthwhile too, to give you some insight into being a veterinarian. 1) I always wanted to be a vet, I can't really be more specific than that unfortunately! I did try a number of other 'career' options but none of them were anywhere as satisfying as I knew veterinary medicine would be. 2) Be very careful about the choices you make regarding school and loans, and work afterwards. The debt load for new grads is extremely high and sadly the veterinary profession has a very high suicide rate because of the mental strain and pressure we are under. Being very self aware and being sure to look after yourself during school and then when you start work is very important. 3) I love helping animals and owners deal with diseases, I enjoy sending home an animal that is now happy and on the mend, when they came in they felt very sick.
