My cat is eating litter and I can feel his spine. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered

My cat has recently started eating his litter. I’ve also noticed his spine bones when I rub down his back now. He is still eating normally, and drinking, still plays and purrs normally, his breathing sounds clean, I can’t feel his ribs, and his gums don’t look pale, he can still also jump up and down. He is 9 about to be 10 years old. He is still responsive and alert, his tail movement as well is also normal. What could it be?

if only Nibbles could talk! It sounds like he has lost either some weight or muscle mass if you are now noticing the spine. It's hard to know why he would suddenly start eating cat litter. It could be he has a nutritional deficiency. It could also be a mental abnormality like Pica. I recommend to have him examined by the veterinarian for blood work and bring his food along too for the doctor to examine the ingredients. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.
