Sorry to hear Marley isn't doing so well with his ears. It is not possible to tell from tge picture tve exact nature of the irritation but if it is indeed infected (typically red, hot, painful and smelly), he will need prescription medication from his regular vet. In the meantime I recommend gently cleaning tge outer war with cotton wool and a pet safe ear cleaner to reduce the build up of wax/discharge

    Unfortunately there is not much you can do a part from apply an ear cleaner to get rid of some of the discharge and relieve discomfort. Ideally tympanic membrane integrity should be assessed before applying any product in the ear canal so I would strongly advice to have Buddy checked as soon as possible at your local veterinary clinic. You can try cleaning out his ear with an ear cleaner, however if it is smelly and bothersome, it likely needs to be seen by a vet to be cleaned thoroughly and antibiotics ear ointment started. I would let the people that own him know and see if you can get into his regular vet for care.

Hi my dog is suffering from ear mites and got tols that olive oil is good so ive been wiping her tab with sterile water and cottonwool balls to clean of residue and putting abit of olive oil after to suffercate the ear mitea but after a couple days o
Poor Red! This ear looks quite sore and infected, so I would definitely recommend taking her to the vet for an exam. It looks like she will likely need oral antibiotics and possibly a steroid or other anti-inflammatory medication, in addition to whatever other treatment might be needed. While it's possible that she could have ear mites, yeast or bacterial ear infections are much more common in dogs - if this is the problem, she will need prescription ear drops from your veterinarian in order to treat the infection.

Marley has been scratching at her ear for about a week now. When I first looked at it, I thought it may have been ear might so I cleaned her ears and treated them but now she’s still itching and they look like this. What can I do to help her?
Probably Marley has otitis (ear infection): if ear mites infestation is excluded, the most common causes are: malassezia (yeast infection) or bacterial infection. At this stage a presence of a foreign body (usually grass seeds) within the ear canal causing secondary infection cannot be ruled out. I recommend to have Marley checked by your local vet for a definitive diagnosis and the appropriate treatment. Please post again on the forum if you would like to discuss it further. Thanks for using Boop by Petco! Based on your picture, it does look like Charlie has an ear infection. It can either be a yeast or bacterial infection, and will need topical and possibly oral medications in order to resolve. I would recommend he be evaluated by his regular veterinarian to determine what type of infection he has, and to start any medications he needs to resolve it. Good luck!

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Leo. I recommend that he sees his veterinarian. He will be examined. A special instrument known as an otoscope is used to look deep within the ear canal. Typically a swab is taken from each ear. This is evaluated under the microscope to confirm the infection and determine the cause. Dogs can have yeast, bacterial or mite infections. This helps to choose an appropriate medication and ear cleaner for him. Treatment will vary based on the severity of the infection. You can start by cleaning the ears at home if you have an ear cleaner for dogs. However, he will most likely need a prescription medication to clear the problem. I hope this information helps!

My dog's ears have become very red and swollen. I noticed it the other day but it was only one ear and I thought it was from feeding him something new. It is now both ears and they are extremely hot too. Should I be concerned?
It sounds like poor Mario may have an infection. Ear infections can be caused by bacterial, parasitic or fungal infection, or a combination of these, and can be associated with dietary or environmental allergies or sensitivities, immune system disorders, or a combination of the above. Mario needs to see a vet to have an ear swab done. Your vet can look at the sample under the microscope and treat appropriately based on what is found. Your vet will also need to examine the ear with a scope to see if the ear drum is intact, as some medications cannot be used safely if the eardrum is ruptured. Ear infections can be very painful, and can sometimes progress to include the middle or inner ear, where they can cause neurologic signs or permanent hearing loss. Please book an appointment to have Mario seen as soon as possible to help get him feeling better.

What’s Going On With My Pups Ears , He’s Been Iching So Bad ! BLACK BUILD
This build up in Marley's ears isn't normal, and it usually a sign of an ear infection. It could be that he is suffering from ear mites, but ear infections can also be caused by bacteria or yeast. He sounds very uncomfortable, so my advice is to take him into a vet first thing in the morning. The vet can examine the debris in his ears to determine what is causing this itching, and can prescribe a treatment for him. It's very important to have him see as soon as possible to get the correct diagnosis and treatment as leaving this untreated can lead to hearing loss. Call the vet in the morning for an appointment. Hi my 1 year old dog has some kind of rash inside both ears which is raised, grey red looking and smells a bit. I have attached a photo. Is this something I can treat myself?
It looks like your kid has a pretty severe ear infection there. The redness is inflammation and the gray area is thickening of the external ear canal from chronic inflammation. What would be best would be for your pup to be seen by your family vet for an ear exam and cytology. In order to treat this appropriately your vet will need to know if there are bacteria (and what type) or yeast or both in the ear canals and if the eardrum is intact. An anti inflammatory may also be needed because of the thickening. If ear infections are a chronic problem for your pup underlying allergy may also need to be explored. I have a maltese/shih tzu puppy around 7 months old and i’m concerned that he might have an ear infection. he has an odor coming from his ears and has been rubbing his head on furniture in attempts to itch i’m assuming. i don’t have the funds to take
I recommend purchasing a dog ear cleaner at your pet store and cleaning the discharge from his ears. Put some cleaner on a cotton ball and massage the fluid into the ear canal. Rub it around to loosen the debris and then wipe it out. Take a dry cotton ball to remove any cleaner left in the ear. I clean ears daily to start, then as the discharge decreases then clean only when needed. If Maxo has ear mites or a severe yeast or bacterial ear infection this will help but specific prescription medication will be more effective. When you can take him in to your veterinarian for an ear exam. They will look at the ear discharge under the microscope to determine the cause of the problem. Then they can give him the right medication. Ear medication often contains a drug to stop the itching as well as something to cure the cause of the infection and that would be more effective than just cleaning his ears. You can try rinsing the ears twice daily with an alcohol free ear cleanser which can help to remove the debris and wax/discharge which is present - this will help to flush the ears and reduce the smell. If he is too painful to allow you then sedation under veterinary supervision may be required
