My dog vomited & won't drink. Could his urine color mean dehydration?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Male | neutered | 11 years and 2 months old | 12 lbs

Romeo was sick on Friday night and Saturday with vomiting so he did not feel like eating or drinking much during the time. He ate his fist meal and drank some water at 5 am this morning. He also ate lunch. His urine was this color this morning- could he be dehydrated? I’m working on increasing his water intake. He did get a fluid therapy injection on Saturday at vet

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Romeo and for providing a picture, it's helpful. I'm sorry that he's been sick. If he's been vomiting and not drinking much, yes it is possible that he's a bit dehydrated. His urine in the picture does look a bit yellow, but if he is now drinking water and feel better, I expect he will become hydrated again in due course. It's fine to increase his water intake, and you could add some gently warmed, low sodium chicken broth to his food to help with increasing his fluid intake. I hope this helps.

Hello. Romeo may be getting plenty of water from his canned food, so you probably have no worries. The things to look for will be if his urine becomes more concentrated & has a much darker color ( urine in the morning is usually always a little darker than the rest of the day ), if his activity level drops off, his eyes seem a little sunken, or when you gently pinch some skin over his shoulder area the skin does not immediately snap back. These can all be signs of dehydration. If you want to try & increase his water intake, you can offer chicken or beef broth or stock in a bowl separate from his water. Just make sure it is low sodium. Thanks for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
