My female dog tied briefly late in her heat. Can she be pregnant?

My young female started her heat about 22 days ago, she was flagging about 9 days ago. By this past weekend, the males were eating again and her vulva was shrinking back down, no more discharge and no more flagging. She was even starting to snap at them. Yesterday my husband was supposed to be watching the dogs and left them to use the restroom, he came out and my older intact male was tied with her briefly. What are the chances of pregnancy? This was the ONLY tie that occurred.

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question. There is a chance of pregnancy, but the best time for a dog is get is pregnant is between day 9-11 of their cycle. Given it's been 22 days, it makes it less likely, but there is still a chance. I'd wait 30 days, then take her into the vet to get blood drawn to check for the hormone relaxin, which occurs when a dog is pregnant. I hope this helps.

The gestation period for dogs is around 60 days long, so if she were mated on March 6th, she may indeed be pregnant and is getting close to giving birth to her pups. To be sure, you can have Honeii seen by her veterinarian for an exam and x-ray or ultrasound to confirm the pregnancy. I hope this helps!

Hello. It is possible that she may only be carrying a small litter, or she may not be pregnant at all. Your veterinarian may be able to palpate for fetuses, but the best way to see if she is pregnant & to know how many puppies she may have is to have an x-ray done. Thanks for using Boop by Petco.

Hello and welcome to Boop by Petco. Dog's heats will last a variable amount of time from animal to animal. Some will last a few days, and some can last up to 3 weeks. Most will be on average around 7 days long. A fair amount of blood coloured fluid will be produced, however dogs are pretty good at cleaning themselves up. About 1 month after she has finished bleeding, I would talk to your vet about getting her desexed to prevent pyometra (pus filled uterus), decrease her risks of mastitis, and many different types of cancers, and prevent unwanted pregnancies. It is possible that Nancy may be pregnant, even after tying with a male dog for a mere 3 minutes. Generally, I recommend waiting until a dog is close to two years old for intentional breeding since both the dog's body and behavior are more mature at that point. That said, many dogs can become pregnant and deliver healthy pups during their first heat cycle. The potential risks involve more difficulty during delivery (possibly requiring a c-section) and more difficulty caring for the pups once born. Options for Nancy at this point include having her spayed now to terminate a possible pregnancy and prevent future pregnancies, waiting until about 42-45 days after the dogs tied to take her to the vet for x-rays (the pups' skeletons would be visible on x-ray at this point), or simply taking a "wait and see" approach. Dogs are typically pregnant for 62-63 days, so you would be able to check the calendar to have a sense for if/when pups may be born. I hope this helps and that all goes well!

What is the chance of my dog being pregnant? My male and female tied only once
There is a chance Zina could be pregnant, as it can take only one mating to get a dog pregnant. I would wait at least three weeks after they tied before taking her into the vet for blood tests to confirm if she is pregnant or not.

I have my puppy daisy who is 10 months old and we may believe she is pregnant. Her nipples are very swollen and she just finished her first heat. Is she old enough to have puppies or are their higher risks for her since she's so young?
Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! There are many animals that have their first litters before age 1. Risks with pregnancy are more likely if the father is a larger breed dog than Daisy. It's hard for me to tell you if she is pregnant. If she just stopped bleeding after her heat then that is way to early to have swollen nipples from pregnancy. Her nipples could be swollen from being in heat or from a false pregnancy. A false pregnancy is where the dog THINKS she is pregnant from hormones but isn't actually pregnant. If Daisy finished bleeding a month ago then the swollen nipples could be from pregnancy. You could have an X-ray done 45 days after she stopped bleeding to look for puppies. Good luck!

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! That isn't a sign of having mated. It is likely due to the hormones of being in heat. She is older now and hormones change. If she has access to male intact dogs breeding is always possible. You won't know for 5-6 weeks if she is possible pregnant. Have a good day!

Dog has been in heat for 3 weeks. Keeping close eye on her. One of my dads dogs got to her literally for maybe 1 minute. No tie. We were waiting to get her fixed until after her first heat cycle. Could they have successfully mated in this time?
I would doubt it. It is possible but not likely. I strongly recommend fixing her ASAP or you will end up with puppies. She should be about done with her heat now. I would go ahead and get her scheduled and get her in for the surgery. Hope this answers your question. Best wishes!

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! It depends on what stage of her heat cycle she is in. She is only going to be receptive to a male for around 4-6 days. If it is early in her cycle or too late she will not allow the male cat to mate. If your cats are both novices they may just need more time to figure things out. If they do not know each other well, the male doesn't normally live with her or if the female is not comfortable with the male she may need time to get to know him. The good thing is that cats come back in to heat quickly so you have time. Good luck!
