My puppy ate styrofoam, now his umbilical hernia hurts. What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 4.5 lbs

My 4.5lb puppy with a umbilical hernia ate a faux berry made of styrofoam today. Should I be worried? Prior to today his hernia was painless, and now when we touch it he’s in pain. He’s had a bowl movement since he’s ate it, and acting normal so far. It’s just when we touch the hernia that he’s in pain. He’s 4 months old.

Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. If he is in pain I think you should be worried and definitely take him to your vet. I'm not sure if the styrofoam ingestion and the hernia and the pain are all related but without examining him I cannot say for sure. Ultimately it is up to you if you want to take him an emergency vet or not but I would suggest you take him. Hope this helps. Best wishes.
