My dog broke his nail, can I clean it at home or does he need a vet? The closest one is quite far. It doesn’t seem to be hurting him much.

Hello, thank you for using PetCoach. So sorry this happened to Frank. If it is not causing him any issues and it is not bleeding then you don't really need to take him to the vet. If he starts limping or the toe becomes swollen, etc then you will need to get him to a vet at that time. I recommend you get this spray wound gel to apply to it (link below, use as directed). I would not do any vigorous cleaning as you may disrupt any blood clots that will then cause it to bleed. ( https://www.petco.com/shop/en/petcostore/product/vetericyn-plus-antimicrobial-wound-and-skin-hydrogel-for-pets ) Also, if he begins to lick it, you will need to get him a cone collar to wear. If he licks it too much it may get infected. We do not want him to lick the wound gel off either as that will defeat the purpose of using it. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! You need to keep the area clean and dry with mild soap and water. I wouldn’t bandage the area because it can trap infection. Eventually the nail will grow back. You also need to keep Nico from licking it because that will cause infection. I recommend taking him to a vet however for pain medication because it likely is uncomfortable. Good luck and kisses to Nico!
