My dog walking slow after distemper vaccine. Is it a reaction? Will steroid help?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Male | neutered | 10 years and 7 months old | 12 lbs

Romeo got his distemper vaccine today at 10 am. It’s 4 pm now and he’s walking slower than usual. Could this be a reaction from the shot? I took him back to vet and they gave him a steroid shot. Should that help? Thank you . No other symptoms. Any others to watch out for?

Hello. I am so sorry about Romeo walking so slow. Sometimes dogs will react to a vaccine the same as we can. Pain, fatigue, a mild fever can all be experienced after receiving a vaccine. Most pets & people recover in about 24 hours, so if Romeo is still having issues tomorrow, or should develop further signs such as vomiting or diarrhea, you will need to contact your veterinarian. The steroid shot should help him to feel better, though a nonsteroidal antiinflammatory medication would have been better. Thanks for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
