Bernese hasn't pooped in days. Is Senekot safe for dog constipation?

Pet's info: Dog | Bernese Mountain Dog | Female | spayed | 71 lbs

Can I give my 70 pound Bernese Senekot for constipation. The vet gave her gábepentin and mirtrazipine. They are not sure what is wrong. She started eating but has not pooped in at least 3 days. First day eating on her own.

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Lucey. I'm so sorry she isn't pooping. Unfortunately we cannot legally recommend giving her any drugs, including OTC drugs, without seeing her in person. We simply can't safe if it's safe or not. I do not recommend giving her any OTC drugs without speaking to her vet first. I'm not sure what tests you've had done, but I recommend an x-ray of her abdomen to see what could be causing this problem. Best of luck.

Hello. I have a male miniature Snauzer about 21 pounds. He's been constipated for about 4 days. Hasn't gone to the bathroom. Is there something over the counter that I can give him?
Mild constipation that usually lasts no more than two days can usually be resolved at home with increased fiber and hydration. Canned pumpkin (not pie filling, just the straight-up pumpkin) or liquid paraffin can be used, and should work straight away in the following 8 hours from administration. DO NOT TRY to give an enema as it could be dangerous and cause electrolyte imbalances and colon perforation. If constipation lasts more than 24 hours from administration of those or 48 hours in general, a check up at your local vet is required. Can I give my 3.3 pound 6 month old chihuahua a 50mg capsule of stool softener?

My dog has not pooped for a couple of days, can I give him a baby enema
A baby enema is not a good idea, it will most likely do nothing. Constipation can be a very serious condition, it can be caused by a physical blockage (foreign body like a bone) or a functional peristalsis deficiency of the intestines. In order to treat simple constipation, you should increase the fibers in the food (e.g. canned pumpkin) and can add a little mineral oil to the diet. I strongly advise taking your dog to the vet in order to check if there is a serious condition causing the constipation first.

Hello and welcome to Boop by Petco. I would recommend x-rays if you haven't already done them to ensure there isn't a blockage and ensure the poop that is stuck (if there is poop stuck, some other conditions can look like constipation but aren't constipation) is not bony poop that requires a more invasive enema. Otherwise, lactulose as well as canned pumpkin can be given to help make the feces softer, however if there is a big blockage in the colon or hard bony poop the laxative won't help this. Sometimes IV fluids are needed to rehydrate Peanut and therefore rehydrate the poop so it can pass. Chat with your vet about x-rays or a more involved enema. Best of luck with Peanut!

My dog had vaginal hyperplasia and it teceded on it's own but now she is not able to poop. Is it related and can I give her dulcolax?
Hello and welcome to Boop by Petco. The inability to poop is NOT related to the vaginal hyperplasia. It likely receeded due to the time in her cycle, as the hyperplasia is hormone responsive. I recommend getting her spayed. Dulcolax can be used in dogs, however the cause for her not being able to poop should be investigated and I recommend a visit to the vet. High fiber foods such as pumpkin (canned pumpkin, NOT pumpkin pie filling) can help as well. Best of luck with Chooe!

CoCo has been whining all day. She is eating but i have noticed that she haven't pooped at all today, but she did pee. Could she be constipated? If so, can i give her a laxative?
Thank you for using Boop by Petco! I’m sorry to hear that CoCo seems “off.” If you have not noticed her straining to pass stool, it is unlikely that she, as a young dog, is constipated. Most commonly whining will be due to pain/discomfort, stress, or boredom. Since she is eating and it doesn’t sound like she’s vomited, as long as her attitude seems normal (not dumpy) it is reasonable to give her some time and see how she is in the morning. However if she seems dumpy/lethargic, if she is limping noticeably or is not wanting to walk, or is having any vomiting, I would recommend you take her to a vet tonight. As far as a laxative, for future reference, hold off on giving any laxative until a vet has evaluated her and given specific instructions. A laxative could make another underlying problem worse due to its potential to cause dehydration. I hope you can both get some rest this evening! Thank you for using Boop by Petco!

My dog seems to be constipated, what can I give him to help with that? Can I give him Metamucil?
Giving a teaspoon or so of Metamucil should be fine and may help your dog go. You may also want to try to increase his water consumption because even mild dehydration can cause constipation. If these remedies don't work and your dog hasn't defecated in over 2 days then I would recommend taking him in to the vet.

Hi my 13 year old Poodle is constipated and has been for around 24 hours. What should I do?
Hello and thank you very much for your question. I am jealous that you live in Australia. It seems great. As long as your poodle is eating, drinking, and playing normally, I would not be concerned yet. In fact, many older animals don’t have as many bowel movements daily as younger dogs do. I have even heard situations about completely normal animals not defecating for an entire week. But, If your pet has not defecated in another 48 hours, you may want to call the veterinarian just to see if they will prescribe a laxative or a fiber supplement to help the bowel movements along. If your dog, however, starts to feel lethargic or if they do not eat as much as they normally do, I encourage you to contact the veterinarian sooner than the 48 hour waiting period.
