Dog spay incision crusty after 9 days. Is this normal healing?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shihpoo | Female | spayed | 6 months old | 10 lbs

Day 9 post spay, she has been more active but still has her e-collar on. I’m just not sure if it’s opening and if the bit of crusting is normal. Nothing is oozing out. She’s not itching or scratching. Should I be doing anything about this?

Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. The incision is healing beautifully. I would not be concerned with the scabbing as it's just a normal part of healing. It is best to leave it alone - don't apply anything on it. Definitely leave the E-collar on a for a few more days minimum. We always tell people to leave it on for 10-14 days post-operatively and it always better to go more towards the 14 days mark. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Kala and for providing pictures, they are very helpful! You aren't paranoid, it's always good to get things checked out when you have questions! Yes some scabbing is normal and things can get stuck to the incision but I'm concerned in the first picture that the incision may be open a bit at the bottom. Without seeing her in person, I can't say for sure so I'd have her checked out by a vet just to be safe. I hope this helps!
