My dog pooped more than usual today. Is this normal for a senior dog?

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Male | neutered | 10 years and 4 months old | 12 lbs

Romeo normally poops two times a day but pooped three times today. Should I be worried? It’s normal , not runny or anything. He’s 10. Can this be normal occurrence ? Thanks

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Yes, this can be completely normal. Given that Romeo's poop is normal looking and not runny means you don't need to be worried. Humans can also vary the amount of times they poop each day, and it's usually not something to worry about as long as everything else is normal. I hope this helps!

    Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sometimes pets bowel movement routines change. Sometimes it’s from the diet, sometimes it’s from a change in exercise. As long as Bruno doesn’t have diarrhea, I wouldn’t be worried. Kisses to Bruno!

Thank you for contacting Boop by Petco with your question about Romeo. You can see a period of not pooping after having diarrhea, so this can be normal. I wouldn't be too worried about it as he's otherwise normal. I would take him for a couple of walks a day, as this can stimulate pooping, and make sure he drinks plenty of water. I hope this helps!

Romeo pooped normal twice today. After he ate his dinner, he got in position to poop but changed his mind I assume and went to the paper to pee. The pee was normal. Should I be concerned about this behavior? Thanks. He’s 10

Hello! This is a great question. Yes it can be completely normal to skip a day of pooping. This happens with humans sometimes as well. Since Romeo pooped twice yesterday, he may not have to poop today. You would know if he was constipated if he didn't poop for a few days, had pebble-like stool that was hard, was straining to poop with very little coming out, and appeared to be in discomfort. Since he seems fine, I do not think he's constipated and I would not worry. I hope this helps!

My dog is a 22lb cockapoo on a grain free food diet. He eats 2 separate times a day. He poops 3-4 times a day. Is this too many times?
Hello, If he is eating well and his feces is formed, I would not be worried about how often he defecates. I only get concerned if it is associated with him becoming constipated, in pain, experiencing diarrhea, etc. A higher frequency of bowel movements alone is not associated with any disease processes. :) I hope this is helpful! If you see your vet tomorrow, please make sure that he/she fully examines Romeo to ensure everything is OK.

My dog takes more than 3 hours to make stool after she eats and somedays she takes less than 15 min why is that?
Hi and thanks for using Boop by Petco! This sounds very normal and typical. Just like with any biological system that is so complex, elimination habits are going to be variable depending on many factors such as composition of the food ingested, digestion, absorption of nutrients, and the transit time of the material in the intestines. As long as everything else is normal, it's completely within normal limits for times of elimination to vary. Just think about yourself and your patterns and understand that with very complex physiological systems, variability will always be present and probably normal. Hello. Probably not. Exercise can & will facilitate bowel movements, & the faster stool moves through the bowels, the less water is absorbed making the stools a little softer. This may be just normal for your pup. If anything changes, of course discuss this with your veterinarian, but if everything else is OK, I would not be too worried. If Romeo has had recent excessive stool production, it may be normal to have less for a day or two. It's fine for a dog to go a day without pooping, especially with that history. If he begins to strain unproductively, become painful, uninterested in food, or vomiting, contact your veterinarian.
