My 10-year-old dog tried to poop, then peed. Should I be concerned?

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Male | neutered | 10 years and 4 months old | 12 lbs

Romeo pooped normal twice today. After he ate his dinner, he got in position to poop but changed his mind I assume and went to the paper to pee. The pee was normal. Should I be concerned about this behavior? Thanks. He’s 10

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Romeo. If he is otherwise acting normally, eating and drinking, not lethargic, no diarrhea, then I would assume this behavior is normal and I would not worry. I hope this helps!

Thank you for contacting Boop by Petco! Yes, this can be completely normal. Given that Romeo's poop is normal looking and not runny means you don't need to be worried. Humans can also vary the amount of times they poop each day, and it's usually not something to worry about as long as everything else is normal. I hope this helps!

Hello. I am so sorry for your worries with Romeo. Urine volume can absolutely vary during the day(s). What usually concerns us is if there is an increase in water intake & also increased urinations which could be an indication of some underlying condition. It is impossible to make any conclusion based on your picture, but I see nothing that overly concerns me. If he is acting & eating normal, there is probably no immediate concern right now, but as a pet ages, things can start to happen. If it has been a while since Romeo has seen a veterinarian, it may be time for a good wellness checkup. This would include blood work & a urinalysis. I would absolutely keep a close eye on Romeo to make sure he urinates appropriately over the next 24 hours. If he is straining, you see blood, or he isn’t himself it is important to get him to a veterinarian. One out of normal urination doesn’t overly concerns me but makes me keep a close eye. If this occurs again bringing a urine sample to the veterinarian can be very helpful along with an appointment. Thank you for using Boop by Petco

Thank you for contacting Boop by Petco with your question about Romeo. You can see a period of not pooping after having diarrhea, so this can be normal. I wouldn't be too worried about it as he's otherwise normal. I would take him for a couple of walks a day, as this can stimulate pooping, and make sure he drinks plenty of water. I hope this helps!

Hello. I am so sorry for your worries with Romeo. It is hard to put any significance to one urine spot because the amount of urine produced throughout the day can vary quite a bit. If Romeo was not very thirsty, then not as much urine would be produced. Wet food has a significant amount of water, so this can take the place of a drink or two from the water bowl, again affecting the amount of urine actually produced. Just keep an eye on things & if anything changes, then have him evaluated. If your veterinarian deems it necessary, he will most likely collect a urine sample, & possibly also a blood sample to check on Romeo's overall health. Hello and thank you for contacting Boop by Petco. If Romeo has good appetite and regular bowel movements, most likely there is nothing to worry about. His stool size should get back to normal soon. If you see your vet tomorrow, please make sure that he/she fully examines Romeo to ensure everything is OK.

My dog randomly started acting sick yesterday. He is having trouble peeing, eating, laying down and he is not able to poop. He’s a small/medium 12 year old Pekingese but he acts like a puppy and he is very healthy.
Thank you for using Boop by Petco! Tyty's symptoms sound rather serious and can be an indication of certain cancers, infections, or even foreign bodies. I recommend having him seen by a vet as soon as possible - especially because he is having trouble urinating, which can result in build up of toxins in the body normally filtered by the kidneys. Romeo has been on GI Wet Food Low Fat by Royal Canine. Since being on this food, hes only pooping once a day. He normally poops twice a day prior. He is fine otherwise. Is this normal? Thank you

My dog has not urinated or dedicated since early this morning, over 12 hours ago. She seems to be acting normally, eating and drinking but I am concerned. Is there anything that I should do?
Thanks for using Boop by Petco! If she is otherwise acting fine, then she is probably going to eventually go especially urinate. It is not completely abnormal for a dog to not defecate in a 24 hour period as sometimes they can get a bit constipated. If this is the case, you can add 2-3 teaspoons of canned pumpkin to her food which may help with constipation. I would though expect her to urinate soon at least before the 24 hour mark. I would continue to monitor her if she is otherwise doing fine. If more than 24 to 30 hours pass by, have her evaluated by your veterinarian. If there is nothing wrong with her, she will most likely go potty by then. Good luck and have a good night!

My female pitbull had one small piece of poop escape her in her sleep. She poops ALOT , this dogs metabolism is crazy, but otherwise she is healthy and happy. Should I worry? Or can this happen once in a blue moon??
Hi there and thanks for posting on Boop by Petco! As long as she is normal otherwise, I wouldn't worry too much about the poop escape. Perhaps she had to potty before she went to bed. You may try taking her out one last final time before bed time just to be sure. Thanks again for posting!
