My dog's split nail looks healed but hurts. Which part to trim?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 5 years and 2 months old | 35 lbs

Dog split and inverted her nail a while back. Crack looks closed/healed but she's in discomfort. Not sure which of the two parts is the one that should be cut off.

Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. The top part is the nail only. The bottom part is the quick (blood supply) and it is starting to get new nail growth over it now. So, you want to cut off the top part only, as far back as you can. It may continue to grow this way for quite a while and you will have to keep trimming it back. Hope this helps. Best wishes.
