Why does my spayed dog lick her vulva frantically every day?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | spayed | 11 lbs

Adult spayed female dog bites and licks her vulva frantically for about a half hour, at just about the same time of day, almost every day. Vet has found no problem, but has primarily been looking at anal gland issues.

Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. It is very difficult to say what is going on. A problem with the anal glands is certainly a possibility - sometimes the dog knows something is not right back there but they don't get the exact location correct. It could also be a urinary issue. It is possible she has a UTI and there is some burning in the vulva that is causing her to react this way. Another option is an obsessive compulsive type disorder (OCD). I suggest that you have your vet check the anal glands and also perform a urinary test to check for infection. If all that can be ruled out then I suspect it could be an OCD type behavior. Hope this helps. Best wishes.
