Dog's tick bite scab has a hard white mass. Is it normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 3 years old | 65 lbs

I pulled a tick off Jake three weeks ago. It scabbed over, then the scab looked “wet” so about ten days ago I pulled it off and cleaned the wound real good. Tonight I noticed it was still hard and scabby and not looking better. I pulled the scab off again and it’s a larger hole with a white hard mass inside. It’s not pus, but it something hard and round about the size of an uncooked lentil. I can’t attempt to pull it out without creating a bigger wound and pain for Jake. Is this normal?

Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. This would not be normal after tick removal especially since it has been three weeks ago. I suspect the head (or some part of the head of the tick) may still be embedded into the deeper tissue. You will need to take Jake to your vet for them to check it and he may need to be sedated so the wound can be explored. You can also speak to your vet about what tick preventative would be best to use going forward to hopefully prevent this from happening again. Hope this helps. Best wishes.
