My dog on prednisone for ear infection: lethargic, not eating. ER?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | English Cocker Spaniel | Male | neutered | 9 years and 6 months old | 20 lbs

My English Cocker is being treated for an ear infection. Antibiotic, 2 more days of prednisone and gabepentin for pain. 2 day recheck with vet shows his ears look better but still very lethargic. He has another follow up appointment tomorrow but because he has zero appetite for food for nearly 48 hours now, should we take him to our MedVet location today or wait for our follow up appointment with our regular vet

Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I'm sorry that Bear is having this issue. Yes, I do think you should take him to MedVet today as an urgent appointment. Typically steroids (like Prednisone) actually increase appetite so I am concerned that he has not eaten in 48 hours despite being on steroids. I hope this helps. Best wishes.
