Cat ate foil, now has bloody stool and isn't pooping. Is this normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed | 6 lbs

My cat (Dsh, female, 3 years old) ate pieces of aluminium foil 48 hours ago. The day after I checked on her stool and there were two small pieces there, the same day later I took her to the vet to get an X-ray which showed many little pieces of foil. They gave me something to give her every 8 hours in order to help her poop them out. However her poop this morning had blood in them and there were no signs of foil, she hasn’t poop since even though I give her what I was instructed to.

Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Often when there is foreign material in the GI tract motility will slow down so I would not be surprised that she has not passed more stool. The blood is likely due to irritation of the colon wall from the foil. I don't know what medication you are giving her so I am unsure what to tell you about how long it will take for her to produce any stool. If she is eating and drinking and acting normally I would not be overly concerned at this stage. Just keep in contact with your veterinarian as to how she is doing and if you and/or your veterinarian are concerned then take her back in for a follow-up exam. Hope this helps. Best wishes.
