Can I add cooked chicken, sweet potato, and rice to my dog's kibble?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Great Pyrenees | Female | spayed | 1 year and 7 months old | 88 lbs

new owner (haven't had a dog in 30 years) of a rescued Great Pyrenees. I feed her Rachel Ray kibbles which she seems to like but I like to add something at her dinner feeding. Is it acceptable that I cook and feed her chicken leg quarters with NO seasoning? I thoroughly shred them after cooking in the crockpot and add a cup of chicken to her kibbles. She really seems to enjoy it. I also add some sweet potatoes or pumpkin and brown rice as well. She's 88 pounds. 1 1/2 yrs. old

Hello. I do not think there is anything that gives us more pleasure than cooking something special for our pets. There is absolutely nothing wrong with adding a little chicken, brown rice & sweet potatoes or pumpkin to her kibble, as long as the majority of her diet is the dog food. Dog food companies go through some rigorous testing to make sure a diet is healthy & more importantly, balanced, which is almost impossible to do with a home cooked diet. Thank you for adopting & thanks for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
