My cat's hot spot healed, but the skin turned black. What is it?

My cat had a hot spot that I took her to the vet for a few weeks ago. They gave her a shot and a prescription ointment for me to put on the area. The wound healed nicely and her fur is starting to grow back. But I noticed that the skin where the hotspot was has turned black. She hasn’t been over grooming or scratching the area anymore since the wound healed. I’m wondering if this is like a severe reaction to the ointment or hyperpigmentation or something? Thank you for including the picture of Marley's skin. This black color change can occur with chronic inflammation, which is my suspicion in this case. I doubt that it's a reaction to the medication, as this would more likely cause some redness and irritation. The color change itself is hyperpigmentation (an increase in pigmentation), but the causes of this are varied and can be temporary or permanent. Regardless, it looks as though this hot spot has healed nicely. It's only a matter of time for the hair to finish regrowing.
