My senior dog's heat cycle has heavy bleeding. Should I be worried?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Basset Hound | Female | unspayed | 45 lbs

My 10 year old basset hound is in heat but the past 3 days her blood flow is a lot heavier than normal. She is acting completely normal and eating normal, but the amount of blood seems worrisome.

Hi, it is probably better to have her checked over. Sometimes it can be secondary to hormonal fluctuations and changes in the uterus over the course of the years. However, best to be on the safer side and have a check up to make sure that she is not becoming anaemic and that the bleeding is not secondary to something else more concerning .
