My dog swallowed a toy ear. He seems fine, but what should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Basset Hound | Male | neutered | 3 years and 1 month old | 50 lbs

My 3 yo basset hound swallowed an ear off one of his toys just like the one in the picture I’ve included around 830 last night. he is eat and drinking like normal even pooped this morning. I gave him some olive oil on his food this morning as well. Have not seen the toy pass yet. Is this cause for concern or should I just monitor him for a couple days and see if his behavior changes?

Thank you for providing a picture of something like the ear Bandit ate, it's really helpful. Given that he swallowed it last night, I'd just monitor him for now. Do not give him any more olive oil, it will not help and because it's an oil and so fatty, it can cause him to have pancreatitis. It's good that he's acting normally, and he is a bigger dog, so this may pass without issue. Monitor him for vomiting, diarrhea, blood in the stool, lethargy, and a loss of appetite. If you see any of those signs, take him into a vet immediately. I hope this helps!
