Why is my dog's paw swollen with a green spot? Is it serious?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | spayed | 5 years old | 20 lbs

We just noticed our dog favoring one leg so we examined her paws and found the main pad was swollen with a green circle on it. Her other paws do not have any green on them and are not raised like this one. Can you tell what might be the cause and if it’s serious?

It's possible there is some sort of infection ongoing on the pad (fungal, yeast, bacterial) or something that was stepped on that caused an injury/discoloration of the food pad. If Agnes is non-weight bearing on the limb, it would be best to have it examined by your vet ASAP for examination and care. Until you can get to the vet, keeping the area clean and dry and placing Agnes on strict kennel rest (leashed potty breaks only) can help reduce any further injury until it can be seen and treated.
