My feral cat has an ear injury. What's causing it if I can't touch?

My kitty is a feral kitty and won’t let me touch him, but I can get close though. Anyway he has an injury behind his ear, and was wondering what it is. Is it self inflicted by accident, or is it from someone or something else?

It’s difficult to determine the cause of the injury from a photo but often times a sore at the base of the ear may be due to self trauma from scratching. If scratching enough to create a sore it may indicate an ear infection or ear mites.
