What food should my 9-month-old spayed cat eat: adult or kitten?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Snow Tiger Siamese | Female | spayed | 9 months and 4 days old | 6 lbs

Health-wise, do you think I should continue to feed my cat adult dry food or kitten food? I got the adult food from the adoption shelter when fostering the cat, and once I adopted the cat I got kitten food from them. I was feeding her the adult food for a full week, and since I got the kitten food on Saturday I’ve been gradually feeding her more of the kitten food, as what’s recommended to do when changing cat food. Do you think I should go back to just feeding her the adult food, to save $?

Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. At 9 months old, if spayed/neutered, they should be eating adult food. Kitten food has A LOT of calories and they will get overweight very quickly eating that. It has nothing to do with cost. Hope this helps. Best wishes.
