Is it safe for a timid indoor cat to live outdoors on a farm?

I have to re-home my 10 month old kitten. She has been an indoor cat, she kind of scared or sliding of strangers and other animals. Would re homing her to a farm and living outdoors hurt her?

Yes, living outdoors would not be good for Luna. She would not be safe, and it would cause her a lot of trauma. It would be best she went to a one cat only household and lived indoors. I hope this helps.

As long as your cat was protected from harm, well fed and protected from the environment, then she is likely fine. All cats are different, some may welcome a change of scenery while others may not. If she is easily stressed, you should keep her environment as consistent as possible. I hope this helps.

It is hard to know what Luna’s experiences were before adopting you, but I expect by her behavior that she may have had some bad experiences outdoors and does not want to repeat those! Cats can be perfectly happy indoors and it is certainly safer than the dangers that present themselves outdoors. Have fun with her- she sure is cute! Thank you for using Pet Coach!

Indoor cats typically have a safer and longer lifespan than thier outdoor counterparts. If she is happy indoors I would not encourage her to go outside. If you are able to build her a secure small "catio" cat porch outside that might be a way she can safely enjoy the outside. But cats that go outdoors are more at risk from trauma from vehicles or other animals and disease, parasites and viruses. I'd be happy that she is content inside.

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! I am so glad you chose to send him to your gramma. Statistically, a 5YO cat doesn’t have great odds of adoption at a shelter. So that right there should make you feel good that you gave him the best chance possible. While you can never say for sure what will happen outside, many cats transition great to being indoor/outdoor. The fact that he comes in at night will help keep him a bit safer than if he were out all the time. Of course, if he is declawed, I STRONGLY encourage he be indoor only as he’s lost his main defense mechanism. I hope this helps you rest easier about your tough decision. Best of luck to you all.

Hello, & thank you for using Boop by Petco. Cats, with a bit of work, can be taught to walk on a leash ( harness ). The best would be never to let your cat outdoors as this increases the chances of run ins with cars, dogs & other cats. But once a cat is comfortable in a home, they very rarely leave, unless something happens. Make sure Luna is spayed, & consider placing a microchip in her. That way, if she does slip off, any veterinarian or shelter can scan her & get her back home to you quickly. Hope this helps. Take care.

Hello, I have a feral cat that has been inside for over 6 years. She wants to go out ! Can I trainer her to come and go ?
Possibly - especially if she is now pretty tame. If she is easily spooked or still not particularly attached to you it might not be a good idea. I recommend starting with short supervised trips outside. You should only feed your cat indoors and offer food during specific meal times to make sure you get her to come back in at night. You can also practice calling to her and giving a treat. Keep in mind that living indoors is much safer for cats and there are risks in going outdoors: infectious diseases, fights with other cats, and cars and dogs are a few of the threats. If she has not been vaccinated for the Feline Leukemia virus I would recommend completing that vaccine series before letting her outdoors where she could contact other cats.

Some cats are truly happier being outdoor cats as then enjoy roaming and hunting. It does have some safety issues but happiness may be more important. If you try to keep a safe box and food in a special place for her, she will likely return to come visit and eat and come and go

Great question! I have always kept my cats as indoor only, and they are perfectly happy. I make sure they have enrichment in the form of toys, and I have a cat tree with platforms off the ground so they can climb up. I also keep it near a window so they can look out and lay in the sun. You can get window platforms for Raven to lie on and look out the window. It truly is safer for them to be indoors, and as long as you provide enrichment in the forms I recommended above, she will be happy. I hope this helps!

How lovely of you to take in this kitten! Personally I believe in keeping cats indoors. They are safer indoors, they aren't at risk of being attacked by other cats and dogs, they can't get attacked by wild animals, and they won't be hit by cars. In addition, cats who live indoors typically live longer than cats who go outside. If you want Scruff to have time outside, I recommend building or buying an outdoor enclosure for her. That way she can enjoy the sunshine outside, but won't wander away and won't have any contact with wild animals and other pets. If you provide enrichment inside (plenty of toys, cat trees to climb, a window seat for her to look outside), then she won't feel cooped up. Good luck, I hope this help!

Since she is blind I certainly think it is safest for her to stay indoors. Even though she has survived thus far outside, it is much more dangerous for a blind cat to be outside. Maybe you can let her out supervised occasionally since she does still want to go out.
