At what age can I safely rehome my pregnant hamster's baby pups?

My hamster is pregnant. At what age will I be able to send the pups to their new homes?

Great question! You can send them to their new homes around four weeks of age. When they reach this age, the male and female pups should be separated and kept in different cages until they go to their new homes. I hope this helps!

They look to be 3-4 weeks old. At about 4 weeks old, all hamster babies should be split from the mother into two cages—one for males and one for females. If you keep them all together they will start to breed as they become sexually mature at only 4-6 weeks of age. It is very bad for them to breed each other as they are related.

It certainly is possible your female hamster is pregnant if she has been living with a male. Your friend is absolutely right to tell you to separate the male from the female. She should be on a cage on her own to reduce her stress levels. After she has her pups, you will need to remove the males when they all reach four weeks of age. That is the age when males become sexually mature and can mate. Separate all the pups from the mom when they reach six weeks of age.

My mom is planning to get a new female hamster. I have done a butt load of research on the subject. I couldn't find an answer to one question. Can I keep the pregnant females?
Thank you for using Boop by Petco! Pregnant females can be kept, but I recommend taking care not to disturb them before and after they give birth. Depending on the type of hamster, the length of pregnancy is around 20-30 days. Pregnant females are easily stressed and should be left alone, with access to fresh food and water. Once the pups are born, try not to disturb them for the first 2-3 weeks, as this may stress the mother and cause her to cannibalize the pups. You can refill food and water, but take care when spot-cleaning the bedding. I hope this helps and am happy to answer any other questions you may have!

My hamster has a spot of hair gone. She has babies and they mess with her. They might be ready to leave their mom because they are 3 weeks old but they mess with her and now her hair is lost. Should I separate them or just see what happens?
Hamsters can be weaned from mom around 3-4 weeks of age. This may be a good idea if they are overgrooming or "bothering" her. The hair loss may also be due to stress. You should also separate male and female pups (hamster babies ) from one another since hamsters can breed as early as 3 weeks of age. If the hair loss persists or if the hair does not grow back, have the mother examined by your veterinarian.

Hello! My hamster recently had babies but I didn’t know she was pregnant. It’s getting to the time where I can clean the cage but I want to move the mom and babies into a larger enclosure. Will this stress them?
It really depends on how old Frankie's babies are, if they are still curled up in the best I would try your best not to disturb them. However if they are older and exploring about as long as you are gentle and don't leave any separated for too long you can move them fine.

I have a mouse who gave birth 2 weeks ago the babies will be 3 weeks old tomorrow and there all eating and drinking water on there own and I was wondering if I can put the babies in a cage without the mom or do I have to wait until there 4 weeks old?
As long as Jacky isn't pregnant again, you can keep her with the babies for another week. At four weeks, you can separate them. Be sure to house the male and female babies separately before eight weeks of age, or else they will mate with each other. I hope this helps!

Yes, it is safe to clean the cage now. I suggest you only do a partial clean. You can clean it fully once you have weaned the babies away from their mom which should be done between 3 and 4 weeks of age.

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! Hamsters can get aggressive, especially around their young. I recommend handling the young as little as possible to prevent Khaleesi from being aggressive towards you or from taking it out on her pups. While it is less likely at this age, hamsters can even canibalize their young when they are stressed. Hamsters can typically be weaned (start eating dry food, no longer needed milk from the mother) at about 3 weeks. I recommend separating them into different cages or homes to prevent the hamsters from reproducing. You should also separate Khaleesi from the male hamster if you wish to prevent further breeding. Once the pups are gone, Khaleesi should resume her normal behavior towards you. I hope this helps!
