Worried my stray cats ate garlic. What symptoms should I watch for?

My mom and I feed strays near our house. About 36 hours ago, we fed them some scallops that may have had garlic salt on them. My mom washed them off first, but I'm still worried that they might get sick from any garlic that might have still been on them. I haven't seen any GI issues and they still seem energetic/not lethargic, but what else should I be looking for symptom-wise? Thank you.

How lovely of you and your mom to feed strays near your house! Garlic poisoning is quite serious in cats, and signs of it include vomiting, breathing difficulties, diarrhea, and pale gums. Given that your mom washed off the scallops like they did not have any garlic left on them, but you can still keep monitoring them for the signs I mentioned above. I hope this helps!

The toxic dose for garlic in cats is about 1 gram per kilogram of body weight in cats, where a gram is equivalent to approximately 1/3 teaspoon of minced garlic or 1/12 teaspoon of garlic powder. If Sapphire weighed 1 kilo and consumed 1/3 tsp. of minced garlic or 1/12 tsp. of garlic powder, that would be a toxic dose. I suspect she weighs more than that and did not consume that much, so she should be fine. Garlic flakes do not seem to have any effect. If she is very small and you do feel she consumed a toxic dose, seek veterinary emergency care immediately. Regardless, monitor for any gastrointestinal symptoms, weakness, rapid heart rate (greater than 200 bpm), or pale gums. Seek veterinary medical care as needed, but I suspect she will be fine!

It is likely Steve did not ingest a toxic dose. Monitor for lethargy, pale gums, difficulty breathing or exercise intolerance for the next 24-72 hours. You may see some minor stomach upset which, in the absence of other symptoms, can be managed with a short fast followed by a bland diet fed in small, frequent amounts until symptoms resolve. If he develops any of the other symptoms, have him seem by your veterinarian.

A very small amount of fresh garlic (a fifth of a clove, of that) fell into my small cats water bowl and she drank a fair amount lot before we noticed, but I don't think she ate Amy. Should we be worried?
I think your cat should be fine. They have to actually ingest the garlic and a clove in her water bowl should have shed enough material into the water to affect her. Of course, keep an eye out for any adverse symptoms, such as vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, loss of appetite. If she displays any signs of illness, get her in to see your vet right away.

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Boop by Petco. You are correct in having concern for Loki licking food that contains garlic. The Allium species of plants is where the toxicity lies. These plants include garlic, onions, leeks, scallions, chives and shallots. If your pet eats one of these products, red blood cells can be damaged, resulting in the cells not being able to carry oxygen. Ingestion can also cause anemia (low red blood cell count) and, in severe cases, the anemia may lead to internal organ damage, organ failure or even death. Since it is difficult to know how much he ingested but it sounds like it wasn't a large amount, I recommend monitoring him closely at home for any signs of toxicity. These include Lethargy, weakness, ataxia (lack of muscle coordination), pale gums, red or brown discolored urine, hyper-salivation, occasional vomiting and/or diarrhea, If you see any of these signs, I recommend having Loki evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible. If she only licked it and didn't eat any I wouldn't be too concerned. Signs to watch out for that she ate some and is now ill include vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, blood in stool or vomit, or painful abdomen. If you do see those symptoms, a vet visit is best.

It could be the fish has upset Voight's stomach. If he's otherwise acting normally now, I'd just monitor him. I'd seek medical attention if he starts vomiting again, has a loss of appetite, becomes lethargic, and/or his gums turn pale or white. I hope this helps!

Since Montie has IBD, it could be this will cause a problem. I'd keep a close eye on him and if he gets any concerning symptoms like vomiting or a loss of appetite, take him into a vet immediately. I hope this helps!

My two cats both ate a small ground meat with garlic and onion powder in it should I be concerned and how badly???
If it was only a small amount of garlic and onion powder your cats should be fine. Garlic and onion are toxic to cats but usually the dose that they can get from eating small amount of powder or seasoning is not toxic. I would suggest you to monitor your cats over the next 24-48hrs for signs of lethargy and inappetance. If they develop any worrying signs you should take them to your local vets.

That should not be an issue. It would be more common to see an upset stomach with diarrhea and vomiting after giving that type of meat to a cat. You should watch Lilly for the next 2 to 3 days for any bombing, diarrhea, weakness or belly pain. If she has any of those signs she should be checked out by a veterinarian.

Hello, and thanks for your question. The toxic effects of garlic are dose-dependent, so if it was just a small amount, Bean will probably be fine. If you're worried, I recommend having him seen by your vet to check a CBC, which looks at his red and white blood cell values. Garlic can cause red blood cell damage, so this will help ensure that his numbers are still ok. In general though, if he's not showing any symptoms, he will probably do just fine.
