Should I get a kitten if my rescued feral cat isn't socialized yet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Mediumhair | Female | 1 year and 4 months old | 9 lbs

I rescued a feral cat who has just recovered from surgery but is taking a while to accept our presence still. We were planning on adopting a new kitten, but is it a bad idea to get one with the feral still unsocialized with us? Or could it be a good thing to get our feral closer to us?

While you can't predict how any cat would react, I would avoid adding stress to both your feral cat, and you, and a new cat until everyone is settled in and comfortable in your home. This would introduce a lot stress to everyone which may lead to increased behavioral issues, or may cause your feral cat to not bond with you as closely. Once your feral cat has settled in some and seems more comfortable, you can then re-evaluate if a kitten would be a good addition to the home.
