My dog has coughing, vomiting, fatigue, and diarrhea. What's wrong?

My dog has been coughing and then gagging and recently had an episode on a walk where he threw up and his back legs were tired. He had really bad diarrhea as well. Is this a sign of heart failure?

Iggy is two years old, it would be very surprising that at his age he would be in heart failure. It does sound like he is sick, and there could be a couple of things going on with him. He could have a respiratory infection causing his coughing, gagging, and tiredness. A GI illness could cause the diarrhea and vomiting, as well as the tiredness. I think he needs to see a vet asap for a health check, so I would take him into his vet in the morning. I hope this helps!

It sounds as Daisy is suffering from a gastrointestinal condition, possibly an infection. it could also be due to ingestion of a foreign body material. i would recommend taking her to the vet the first chance you get, she will need to be checked first, if the vet thinks it's a simple gastrointestinal infection she will need an anti vomiting injection, antibiotics and a special food for a few days in order to get better. if the vet thinks it is more serious she will need a blood test and possibly an ultrasound in order to find out what is wrong.

Poor girl. So sorry for the late response in getting to your message. I hope that your pet is still stable. Considering this is day 5 since the start of her symptoms I would recommend taking her in right away for care, even if that means an ER visit. She could have a simple upper respiratory infection going on, or it could be something more serious such as a lower airway infection (pneumonia) or even herat disease can cause symptoms of coughing. I doubt the weed killer is the culprit - while you can see vomiting and diarrhea with most herbicides the dog usually needs to ingest a fairly large amount to be affected. Congestive heart failure could cause a cough, and I think that a recheck with your vet would be a good idea since things have now changed. Heart failure would not typically cause diarrhea.

Hi, my dog has been coughing and sounds like he's chocking but he also has a runny nose and has just started vomiting saliva a couple times. Would you mind helping me identify this issue?
Poor guy. It sounds like at the very least Ziggy has an upper airway infection. I would recommend taking him to your vet to get him examined today if possible. If he does have an infection, then a short course of antibiotics prescribed by your vet generally is enough to resolve the issue. My dog frequently has fits of a deep kennel sounding cough followed by a yack / gag. Like he’s throwing up but nothing comes up- is this a sign of a collapsed trachea?
Hello! I hate to hear that Iggy has this happening to him. Coughing can have many causes. In general, the most common are all allergies, kennel cough, or poor air quality (and often it can be even a combination of these). A collapsing trachea can cause a deep cough. It is often described as a goose, honking cough. Some people will also describe a condition, known as a reverse sneeze as a cough. You likely could go online and find several videos of pets who have these conditions and could see what they sound like. YouTube has many videos of pets exhibiting the types of conditions. If this is infectious, in an otherwise healthy pet, they can often clear the infection without a vet visit. There are some things you can do at home to aid in the recovery: Avoid any strenuous activity and vocalization. Panting, barking, and vocalization will cause further irritation to the trachea, and this will cause more coughing…. Which will cause more irritation. Keep your pup indoors. Only go outs

My dog is having continuous cough followed by lethargy,loss of appetite and vomiting at times and she has white mucus secretion from eyes too.
Those symptoms are very vague and could be attributed to almost any illness or disease process. You should take her to a vet for an exam if at all possible. She could have an upper respiratory infection, pneumonia, a virus (like distemper) or so many other possibilities. It is best to get a diagnosis from the vet and then treat her accordingly.

The best advice I can give is to take him to the vet. What you are describing could be due to eating a poison or a severe stomach/intestinal disease. This can quickly make them dehydrated, which will give the sick/tired appearance. If he cannot keep water down, then a vet will need to give fluids in order to keep him from getting too dehydrated. They can also help identify what the problem is and hopefully give specific treatment for the problem. I hope that helps and Paddy gets well soon.

My 3month old puppy has been coughing and gagging for 2 days now. He also has had diarrhea on and off for a couple of days. He is eating normally. His vet is not open today but he does have an appt. On Tuesday.
Poor Max. Coughing and gagging could be due to a number of things, but most concerning in a young puppy is contagious disease such as "kennel cough" or even pneumonia. Diarrhea may be due to intestinal parasites, a diet change, or stress. Monitor him closely over the weekend. If he stops eating, acts lethargic, the cough progresses, or he develops a fever (99.5 - 102.5 F is normal in dogs), then take him to an emergency vet right away.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding your dogs. I worry they have something infectious if they are both displaying similar symptoms. An upper respiratory tract infection is usually indicated by coughing, sneezing, eye and/or nose discharge and bringing up white foamy material. The diarrhea may or may not be related. They will need to see their veterinarian if their symptoms persist. A lot of times an antibiotic will be prescribed. In the meantime, encourage them to continue drinking so that they do not become dehydrated. It is generally safe to hold a dog off of food for 18-24 hours to rest the GI tract. This may resolve the diarrhea. Again be sure to provide water. I hope this information helps!
