My cat has tapeworms. What oral medicine is safe with flea meds?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 12 lbs

Hello, I was able to trap a very skittish stray cat and get him neutered and shots. I feed him every day and give him once a month oral flea medication (CapShield Plus, which contains 11.3mg of Nitenpyram and 204.9mg of Lufenuron). I just noticed he has tapeworms and was wondering what type of oral tapeworm medication I can give him that won't interact with the CapShield Plus. Thank you very much for your help, Robert Covich

Hello Robert, my name is Dr. Elizabeth and I am happy to help. Great job on saving this Simba! In general, this a safe product with rare instances of adverse reactions. There is an over the counter dewormer for tapeworms called Bayer Tapeworm dewormer. It's also generally safe and has rare adverse reactions. To be extra careful, separate the doses of the medications by 3-4 days and give with food. I hope this helps and please feel free to check in any time.
