My dog has an eye bump and is rubbing it. What can I do until the vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Boston Terrier | Male | unneutered | 11 months and 10 days old | 25 lbs

Does anyone know what this is? I’ve read a few posts of it possibly being a benign tumor or a stye. It does seem to be bothering him as he keeps rubbing at his eye with his paw. I can’t take him to the vet until Monday so I was hoping to find out what I can do in the meantime.

Hello, My name is Dr. Elizabeth and I am happy to help. That may be a sty but it could also be an infected hair follicle, blocked pore or other type of infection. If it's still there on Monday or if Caesar is still rubbing at it, I recommend to have him examined. In the mean time, have Caesar wear an elizabethan collar at all times. If he accidently scratches his eye while rubbing at it, he'll need to go to the vet before Monday. Have him wear the collar at all times. You can apply a warm compress to it every couple of hours for 10 minutes. This might help it to come to a head. If it ruptures, gently clean it with water and protect it from rubbing. If it's not dried up by Monday, also have him examined. I hope this helps and please feel free to reach out any time.
