My dog's dew claw is broken but not off. What are the first aid tips?

Hello. Can I have some advice on how to look after my female (4) Dachshund who seems to have broken her dew claw. It isn’t off completely. Should I bath, clean and wrap a bandage / apply plaster until I can get an appointment at the vets? Thank you.

Ouch, poor Nahla! That looks quite painful! When the dew claw is broken like that, it is very painful and she will need to see a vet asap. Clean the area very gently, but if she doesn't like it, stop immediately. Wrap it to protect the area so she doesn't snag or catch the nail on something, and to stop her from licking or chewing on the nail. I'd also put a cone on her to keep her from licking or chewing on the cone. Get her into a vet asap to get that treated. I hope this helps!

It looks like it's broken off. Just keep an eye on it for now. Gently clean the area with warm water and antiseptic soap. To keep him from licking at it, you can put an Ecollar on him. You can get one at a pet store or make one at home. Keep the wound clean and dry, and monitor it for signs of infection. If you see redness, swelling, warmth to the touch, or pus, then it is infected and he will need to see the vet for antibiotics to treat it. Best of luck.

My dogs dew claw is pointing out, we think it might be broken. Do we need to call an emergency vet or will he be OK till the morning when they open?
If he is painful, he should be seen sooner rather than later if only for pain management. If he seems comfortable and is not actively bleeding, it can probably wait. Place an appropriately sized [e-collar](https://www.petco.com/shop/en/petcostore/product/well-and-good-e-collar) (cone) on him to prevent licking until you see the veterinarian. Crate him or restrict his activity if possible. A fractured dewclaw may need to be removed surgically. If only the nail is broken, it should be trimmed back and wrapped lightly until healed. Afterwards, [keep nails trimmed](https://www.petcoach.co/article/trimming-your-dog-s-nails-with-a-clipper) to prevent snags or breaks.

Today we found half my dogs duclaw randomly on the floor and the stopper (not sure if that’s the actual term) is visible. He hit it once and screamed of pain but is running around now. No bleeding, but I’m wondering if there is anything i can do 1. T
I am sorry to hear about Marshall. If there is any remnant of the toenail that is hanging not fully attached or painful, then this may need to be trimmed or removed as it can cause pain from the movement/tugging. This is best done by a veterinarian as it can be uncomfortable and difficult to do at home. If the claw has been completely removed then the area can be sore and prone to infection. For this reason you may still consider a visit to the vet for some pain medication and in some instances we may decide to prescribe an antibiotic. Luckily the dewclaw isn't constantly in contact with the ground, so it is less likely to get dirty and traumatized repeatedly. You can try keeping it clean with a mild soap or antiseptic such as Hibiclens (available at most pharmacies) and applying a topical antibiotic like neosporin. If your dog is licking the nail an e-collar (the cone shaped collar ) may be needed to prevent this as it can cause infection. If the area around the nail starts to becom

It looks like Penny broke her nail. I would recommend that you take her to a vet to have it examined. Depending on the location of the break and the tissue underneath, sometimes they can do a quick yank to remove the nail and other times they need to be sedated so the nail can be cut off short. Occasionally they need bandaging, antibiotics, or anti-inflammatories to help with healing. Until she sees the vet, make sure she doesn’t lick, since that can spread bacteria.

Hello, and thanks for your question on Boop by Petco. Poor Harley! Torn toe nails (including dew claws) are common injuries, and thankfully are not medical emergencies so she should be ok until morning. If you can see a nail that appears broken, sometimes soaking in an epsom salt bath for 5-10 minutes twice daily can a bit. You can either soak the affected paw in a little bucket of epsom water, or you can fill the tub 2-3 inches and have her stand in it. However, if any of this causes her stress or she resists it, then I wouldn't push it - she could get more hurt if she's struggling against you. Otherwise, I recommend keeping her on level ground when she needs to go outside, so she's not accidentally bending that nail, and keep her as quiet as possible until she can be seen by your vet. I do NOT recommend giving her anything for pain. None of our human medications are going to be safe or effective, and anything you give her could interfere with a better medication that your vet

My chihuahua broke his dew claw. It is bleeding intermittently and is causing quite a bit of pain. The area is wet because he won’t stop licking it. Will he remove the dew claw on his own or should I get him to a vet?
I'm so sorry to hear this happened to Cowboy. The dewclaw will not come off on it's own. I suggest you get him to a vet for an exam. It is obviously painful for him so at least they can prescribe some pain medicine for him. If he keeps licking it then it may become infected causing a worse problem. The vet can examine the claw and determine what needs to be done (which may be nothing; I cannot tell from the photo). Hope this helps. Best wishes.

Hi there and thank you for using Boop by Petco to address your concern. I would recommend taking her in to the vet to have this cut back so that the nail does not snag on anything and tear. She may need an antibiotic as well as a pain medication. Angel will be ok and it does not appear that there are any other concerning changes where the broken nail is. Poor Paddt! Sometimes these nails need to be removed behind the break. It's hard to give you the best advice without being able to examined the nail. I recommend to have Paddt examined by the veterinarian. He should also be wearing an elizabethan collar at all times to prevent any licking since this could make the nail infected. The area should be kept clean and dry and the exercise should be severely restricted until the nail is healed (no walks, running or jumping).
