My dog has red spots on her belly. What are they? Should I see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 3 years and 5 months old | 30 lbs

What are these red marks on my dog’s belly? They are not her nipples and I have never seen them before. Does she need a vet visit?

Ouch! It looks like there may be a bit of contact dermatitis (allergy) going on. This can happen for a number of reasons including rolling in something that caused irritation (grass, dusty floors, etc), food allergies, or even minor infections causing irritation. You can try giving a benadryl at home to help with minor itchiness. An Elizabethan (cone) collar or T-shirt over the area is also a good idea to keep Ellie from licking it so she can't cause more irritation or infection. If the area doesn't improve or resolve in a day or two, is very itchy, painful, or worsens, then a vet visit is best to find the underlying causes so it can be treated.
