My dog's long nail is twisted and orange. Is it a fungal infection?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Greyhound | Female | spayed

My dog has a long nail and while attempting to cut it I've noticed it looks different than her other nails, it starts to twist and the base seems wider and open with a visible orange-y colour. I'm not sure if it's something to take her to the vet about or if she just needs her nails cut.

Hello my name is Dr. Shines and I am happy to help. The nail looks yellow and brittle from the photo. Most often this is due to an infection. Fungus can make nails look like this. I recommend to make an appointment with Elle's veterinarian. She'll get tested for fungus and likely get a medicated, pet safe, ointment. I hope this helps and please feel free to reach out with any additional questions.
