Dog's eyes swollen, goopy, rubbing face: Is it pollen allergies?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 22 lbs

My dogs eyes have been swollen and there has been goop at the corners. He is rubbing his face with his paws. We have been having terrible pollen in the area and I believe it could be the result. It started in one eye and now is in both. He’s acting normally, eating and drinking. Once he’s up and about his eyes are all the way open.

Poor Huck. It's possible that he has a pollen allergy or inflammation of his eyes. I would recommend he be seen by your veterinarian to rule out more serious issues like an ulcer or foreign material in the eyes. If it is just allergies they can prescribe topical eye drops to bring him comfort. I would place a cone on him to prevent him from traumatizing his eyes.
