My diabetic dog's infected toe is bleeding. Is it an emergency?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pug | Male | neutered | 11 years and 6 months old | 25 lbs

Started Clindamycin 150 BID 8 days ago for infected nail bed. Went back to vet this a.m. because of how it looked-top photo. Vet gave him a shot and said to stay on antibiotics, if no better will amputate toe early next week. Now see bottom photo for how it looks tonight. Should I be worried that it’s open and bleeding? Does it need wrapped? Soaked? Topical meds? Can’t reach our vet tonight. He’s diabetic also.

Unfortunately, just as in humans diabetic patients can be subject to increased risk of blood flow issues to the extremities and frequency of infection. I can't tell whether or not it will require amputation from the picture, but the swelling can be managed with some icing. I can't recommend other meds or topicals based on this image. Use a cone to prevent any possible self inflicted harm until morning. If the swelling is getting progressive worse quickly during the night, if your dog is feverish or acting like it, or if there is uncontrolled pain, seek emergency care tonight.
