My cat has a painful tail injury after a fight. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | unspayed | 5 years and 2 months old | 7 lbs

My girl got out side and attacked by 2 cats leading to a bad tail injury, I'm not sure what to do the vet's are not trustworthy in my small town they do more harm. She can use the toilet and is eating, but obvious pain. Is there anything I can do for her besides put her down? It's the last 2 inches and feels like a bone club swinging it around and I haven't attempted to shower her until I get supplies and ointments tomorrow but I have amox in her.

I'm so sorry this happened to Gibson. Unfortunately, she likely needs just the last portion of her tail amputated, especially if it is broken. I do not think euthanasia is indicated and many veterinarians are capable of doing a tail amputation. I see there are 3 local vets in your area. I would recommend finding one you trust and making an appointment ASAP. She needs pain medication, appropriate antibiotics, and surgical treatment. Luckily it's not a major procedure and she likely could come home right after.
