My dog breathes heavily after surgery. Should I go to emergency vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | spayed | 6 years and 6 months old | 73 lbs

My dog had a lipoma removed Thursday. Have been giving carprofen and Augmentin as prescribed. Site has been draining red serous fluid x1 day and is a bit red. No pus. More tender today than prior days. She is now breathing heavily. Seems better when laying on her back. Do I need to take her to an emergency vet?

While drainage is normal post-surgery, heavy breathing, discomfort, or excessive pain, especially while already on medications, are not. If Bailey is in severe distress or is turning blue or pale, or is panting heavily, it would be best to bring her into emergency care ASAP. If she seems stable, but is in discomfort or painful, contacting your vet to bring her in is also a good idea.
